High SchoolCOUNSELOR

Tammy Williams

How Does a Counselor Help?

There are many ways that a counselor may help. Counselors aid in the development of self-understanding and self-awareness, as well as the building of self-confidence, self-esteem, and positive attitudes and values. The counselor is trained to recognize a student's capabilities and help the student make the best use of them. The counselor assists students in building decision-making skills and awareness of the world of work. Our counselor helps students transition into high school and then from high school to other areas, such as work, military or further education. The counselor also helps students in planning their school, college, job, career and personal goals.

What are other counselor responsibilities?

  • Counsel Students individually and in groups
  • Help identify the special needs of students
  • Assist parents and teachers in helping students
  • Use tests to provide information about abilities, achievement, interests and needs
  • Schedule student classes
  • Monitor student progress toward graduation
  • Coordinate efforts and referrels with other school specialists and outside agencies
  • Participate in curriculum development
  • Maintain student confidences
  • Schedule a variety of career presentations and field trips
  • Write student recommendations
  • Explain vocational programs to students and parents
  • Promote health, non-stereotypical attitudes towards all careers

Consulting With The Counselor

In addition to students, teachers and parents may also talk with the counselor. Some reasons teachers and parents might visit include:

Teachers

  • He/she never stays in his/her seat
  • He/she is often absent from class
  • He/she appears to be worried about something
  • He/she wants to go to college next year, but can not afford it
  • He/she appears to need some special help

Parents

  • Our family needs help. Is there any help in the community?
  • Why are his/her report grades so different from standardized test scores?
  • He/she seems to be a loner and doesn't have many friends
  • Is my son/daughter taking the right classes?
  • He/she is interested in microbiology. What are some good colleges?
  • What is the FAFSA form?
  • He/she seems depressed lately

Along with teachers and parents, numerous other parties visit with the counselor, including administrators, student personnel workers, community resource personnel, police officers, physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, behavior modification specialists, and other mental health professionals.
